Rastatura Italian Plaster, Stone & 3-D Art
This project was done because of a remodel done to the house. There were cracks in the walls from lifting the entire house to install new building supports.
There were also new windows installed, electric outlets installed and other structural changes which damaged the walls.
The original wall texture was an artistic 3-color plaster treatment. (Salmon, Yellow Ochre & Baby Blue)
To save this artistic technique (unique to the house) special colored plasters were custom mixed to match the old plaster colors. (A challenging task)
(The west wall) Stone with Trompe L'oeil painted chess piece and Pink Hibiscus...(close-ups below)
(The east wall)
This material is a marble & limestone plaster mix which is as close to stone as you can get without actually hiring a stone mason.
Upon touching it, it will feel hard and stone-like to the touch. The grout lines are hand-painted.
The clients son liked to play chess so we decided, halfway into the project that it would be a nice idea to paint a Trompe L'oeil
chess piece inside a niche. On the opposite side we decided on a Pink Hibiscus in blue glass.
Close-up of the stone texture after the GRAY-UMBER patina is applied.
The patina is absorbed and sinks into the Italian Plaster similar to a Fresco Treatment. It becomes part of the stone.
If scratched the color is beneath the surface as well so as not to see the scratch.
In process painting in the trompe niche and chess piece.
Hanging Lavender.
On inside wall, a trompe l'oeil stone lion-head was painted. An 'homage' to the clients mother who was an artist.

Applying the soft patina glaze with wet rag in hand to afterwards rub off the high points...leaving the darker areas behind.
