Trompe L'oeil Cut-outs
This project was commissioned by The Village Hat Shop located in Hillcrest, San Diego, CA.
The original concept was to showcase the hat shops two unique hat brands in a fun and artistic manner
to the community. Instead of just having signage, we decided on trompe l'oeil characters looking out of windows.
This was also in keeping with the stores other location in Long Beach, Ca.

Fred, the owner, loved the idea of "The artist caught in the act of painting" so this was the first window.
The pieces are cut out of ultra-rigid MDO board & then primed, painted, sealed in studio & then installed.
Three trompe l'oeil pieces installed on building.
Before and me posing during installation
"The Artist" (myself) Caught-in-the-act & family dog "Jaxon", the inspiration for the line of hats.
"The Fiddler" My interpretation based on the stores logo.
"Susan" Susan is the hat designer for "sur la tete Hats", the second line of company hat designs.

"NINA"
"Nina" is a trompe l'oeil portrait. We get a lot of
double takes as people walk or drive by. It is sealed with an anti-graffiti wax coating which cleans up easily.
Nina, from the local coffee shop, was good enough to pose for the piece.

"DOG LICKING ICE-CREAM"
This is a Trompe L'oeil scene for Heidi's Frozen Yogurt in Long
Beach, CA. The owner wanted a "Norman Rockwell"
type of scene. So I came up with a Grandpa type figure with his
Granddaughter and a Dalmatian sneaking a lick.
These figures are cut out of Ultra-Rigid M.D.O. board and
sealed with an Anti-graffiti gloss coating.

This client traveled around the world and wanted design elements in her home
to reflect this. I painted a Japanese "Shoji Screen" on wood and installed it on
the bathroom wall. The client loved the hummingbird at the bottom....I also
glued real bamboo pieces on both sides for a more realistic effect...Also, I stenciled
bamboo shoot patterns on the three surrounding walls.
CLOSE-UP ("One Picture is worth a thousand words" in Oriental characters)
Painted on wood panels and framed with 8" aged & antiqued planks
